Radius arm crossmember

Post by shrapnell »

Ok guys this is a new one for me my 68 has a crossmember between the radius arm mounts (The bushing side) my guess is this is to protect the frame against a front side collison is this correct my 70 had a big block in it and the crossmember is missing what are your opionions on the function and importance of this crossmember the reason why im asking is because someone has backed up over astump and rolled the rear side down just abit frame is still straight butit has pulled away from one rivet on the driver side and i want to get this squared away before i take it to get the front end aligned

I would locate a good one from a (auto) truck some of them bolt in, so you want have to grind and drill as many rivits, and before starting take
a look at the bushings, and if needed have new ready to install.

Cut ( FOUR ) pieces of an old ford truck frame that has been junked, fit them to the inside of your good frame, add weld and bolts, the leafs are now inboard, time for the (big WIDE tires)!

Oh yeah (Tubbs)

I would think it also stablizes the radius arm brackets.
I've got a good one. If you need it shoot me a PM.

Yes that is what it does. You NEED it. The Radiuos arm connect at a slight inboard/outboard angle, so when you hit a pothole or bump this creates a torque on the frame that would try to compress that crossmember. I have seen many trucks without them and all have had frame cracks in that area.

:2cents:

EDIT:
If you did need it removed I would box the frame a good 18" forward and aft of the radious arm atachment.
