Hello all, I just bought a 73 f100 and it inherently has a few problems. I was just wondering if any of you could help me out.
1. The steering seems really loose. There is quite a bit of play when driving. any ideas?
2. The truck has dual tanks, but the truck will only register one tanks fuel gauge, you can flip the switch in the truck and it wont read the rear tank
Other than that I think im good. Nice to meet you all and this site is amazing
As far as your steering issue, its probably a worn steering gear. You can adjust them but if its too bad most likely you will have to get a new gear box.
Your fuel guage problem could be several things. Your switch could be bad. The wiring between the switch, the guage and the sending unit could be bad, or the sending unit itself is bad. An easy way to check the guage and wiring is to flip the switch to the tank that isn't working and ground the sending unit wire. If the guage goes to full than its a bad sending unit. If it doesn't do anything than either the guage or the wiring is bad.
Hope this helps a little,
Corbin
Honestly, I really would rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy.

the steering could be several things. the steering column bearing could be worn the steering column hosing where the bearings are could be worn . the rag joint could be torn or worn. the steering gear could be worn the tie rods drag link or and of that stuff could be worn. and finally the wheel bearings could be worn too or need greased and retightened.
the fuel tank reading problem could be a dirty plug a bad sending unit. a bad float on the sending unit. a bad or dirty wire coming from the tank sneding unit. or a bad switch.
check this stuff out and elmintae all the possibles and then get back with us on what you found out.
