Tilt while keeping old wheel

Post by F-100Ranger »

Someone put a bump side steering wheel on my truck and I want to go back to the original big wheel. But I want to make it a tilt wheel while leaving it a column shift auto.

I'm doing a rebuild and want to keep the my 68 lwb as original as possible or at least use Ford parts.

Am I going to have a problem putting the old wheel on a newer column?

Thanks

Yes you will have trouble. The turn signal cancellers are different. Also the tilt uses 2 wire horn, but the old wheel would be a one wire horn. I have a 78 wheel on the old column in my 67. I fianlly got the horn blowing, but the signal cancellers have never worked. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but there will be a lot of work involved.

No, it won't even come close to fitting. Not only is the bumpside hub smaller, but the nubs on the bottom side of the steering wheel contact the column. You might be able to grind those nubs down to actually mount the wheel, but there's still the hub size difference, which would look pretty crappy IMO. Here are a couple pics I took a while back, trying to fit a bumpside wheel on a '79 ttilt column:

unless you use the 70-77 wheel on that column. then it will work.
