Rebuilding a Saginaw PS Box?

Post by F100builder »

I've got a Saginaw box in my '69 and just swapped in another Sag from a '74 or '75 in the hopes that it would have a tighter feel and leak LESS (yes, it leaks also but it doesn't look as bad)! Now, I'd like to rebuild or at very least reseal the original box and swap them once again. Has anyone done this? A new seal kit shouldn't be hard at all but I've never rebuilt a box before and would like to try it. $200 or more for a rebuilt one is more than I'd like to spend. Is there a how-to page on this site or anywhere else?

i think the hardest part would be resetting the gear mess. if you take that apart. i wouldn't but its not all that hard to get them lined up. its the up and down meshing that you dont want to mess with much if at all.

The factory shop manual describes it in great detail step by step. They are very, very simple creatures. Setting the gear preload is simple. Don't follow the instructions, just tighten until the backlash is gone and a small bit more at center, do not overtighten!!!!!

I would adjust the preload and replace the seals in the truck.
