Replacing Calipers--Any Tips?

Post by J. W. Hall »

Hi all. My front drivers side caliper is leaking--it looks like from the bottom of the two pistons. It's a 1968 CS F250 2WD. My plan is to just replace the caliper with a "loaded" one from NAPA, and probably do the other front caliper while I'm at it.

I've never done this, but (thanks to this forum, largely) I've done several other improvements (the latest was to rebuild the carb--went great!). So my abilities are limited but I've had success with the carb, new fuel pump (no problem), and the pertronix and coil (also no problem). What I'm getting at is: I think I can replace these calipers--but are there any tricks or things I should know? "Always do this" or "Never do this" that may not be obvious upon taking off the wheel and comparing the old with the new?

I'm ok at bleeding brakes afterwards, so my question really just goes to the 1. removal of the old and 2. installation of the new.

Are there adjustments to watch out for?

Thanks all--here's hoping I can stop the truck once I'm done :)

Only thing I can think of is don't get the wrong one on the wrong side. Another guy did that while converting his 69 to discs. They will not bleed when you get them reversed.

Are you interested in selling the drivers side caliper? I'd be interested in buying it. I'll rebuild it.
PM me if you want to sell it.
