Frame question???

Post by green68250 »

Hey,
I have a '72 F-100 SWB and the PO chopped the frame and I want to find a solid frame to go under it. My buddy has a line on a '73 shorty frame and I was wondering if it would work or not? Is there anything I woulh have to modify? The guy wants $250 for it so thats not bad.

Thanks for the help,

Corbin

Never mind. Maybe if I would read the articles that Keith put together I wouldn't be asking dumb questions like this. So basically the frame is wider so I would need to drill new holes in the bed (as if it doesn't have enough already) and get a different rear axle to go with it. So I think I will hold out for a '67-'72 so there won't be any modification nessesary. If anybody has one that they want to get rid of let me know.

Thanks,
Corbin

Corbin, unless you are going for a stock restoration a 73-79 frame may not be such a bad idea.If you could locate a rolling chassis, preferably with power steering you would get a new frame and 3 major upgrades at the same time. :)

if you were to use the larger frame. dont drill the bed just weld adapter plates onto the frame and reuse the old bed holes. it would make for a better lookign job when you were done.

Yeah the adapter plates sound like a good idea if I were you use the '73 frame. My buddy has a another line on an entire '72 shorty for $500 that I might take or try and get just the frame. I the '73 was a rolling chassis I probably would take it but its just the frame so there are several other things that I would need to find to go with it. I don't know i will wait and see if anything comes through in the next week or so and then I will decide.

Thanks for the help,

Corbin

Anybody now how much a bare shorty frame weighs? I found one for $200 that I want to get this weekend. I just wanted to know if it would take more than 2 guys to get it on the trailer.

Thanks,
Corbin

Ok, thanks maybe the guy has a forklift or something. I'll get a couple of friends to help me take if off the trailer. Thanks for the heads up.

I loaded one with just 2 people. I've since moved it by myself too. Easiest way is to put a dolly under the front (it's heavier because of the crossmember), lift the back and roll it around.

One person is possible, just easier with 2.

I have moved a bare frame by myself (I weigh 150# soaking wet) If it has the suspention on it then you will need 4-5 guys.

Make sure you get a good title for the frame. and check to make sure you can get it taged.
