Can a booster be rebuilt?...pics included

Post by JWW »

I found this booster off of a high boy. Can boosters be rebuilt? If so, can this one be used on my 67? I am converting over to disc brakes. I have bought a set up off a mid 70's F100.

Yes, they can be rebuilt, but not sure if it's something that we can get parts to rebuild them ourselves...

That's a nice pic of the mounting brakets.... with the little holes on top... :D

you need a booster off of a 67 only. unless you change your brake pedal also. then you can use it. and you will also have to get a new brake light switch for a 68=72 and rewire your wires to match the new switch.

yea the highboy has the brackets going up. doesnt your book say something about f350 on that pic you posted. i wonder if the 4x4 and f350 are all that way. and the f100 and f250 are the other way? there has to be some reasoning to this. hawkrod showed us what th holes are for on the larger trucks.

Yes boosters can be rebuilt but the parts aren't available to the general public. It's probably a liability issue.

Don't mean to sound confused, I don't understand your second paragraph. Also, I thought I could cut the end off the donor truck wire for the wiring into the porpotioning valve. I was going to splice that into my wire going to the brake lights. What other light switch do I have to rewire?

The whole brake assembly (pedal and booster) should work off this highboy truck, right??

Do repair shops fix them or do you have to buy new?

the brake ligth switch hooked to the 67 pedal is different than the 68-72 switch. the proportion valve is a disc brake thing. so if you do use the pedal and bracket it will work. and repair shops dont rebuild them either. it takes a specail factory maching to get them apart. there is a big spring inside with the diaprham. you can test the booster by sucking onn it. it you can crete a vacuum by sucking on it. it will be ok for now.

I went and looked. I see which wires you are talking about. Sounds like if I take the entire brake pedal, bracket from the donor truck, it will wire up fine.

I don't plan on doing any sucking though

Repair shops normally buy remanufactured boosters from the parts stores.Reman boosters for our trucks are available thru most parts stores.

If you can't find a booster run a search for Power Brake Exchange. They rebuild boosters. :)

Probably better off getting a 67 booster, with the correct length rod from booster to pedal. I have a 66 and installed a 70 booster and power disc brakes.
THE PROBLEM was the rod on the 70 was longer than the 66, so I had to put 1" spacers between the booster brackets and firewall to make the rod connect correctly. I also had to make a bracket to mount a new brake light switch. I think the rod on 67 and 66 are the same length.
If that is true I would use a 67 booster and you wouldn't have to make any of the previous modifications. I have seen a few 67 boosters around here but haven't had time to measure the rod length. I know my 67 Mustang has the same length rod as my 66 f250 came with originally.
As you can see we have all done things differently.
