78 Tilt column in my 72

Post by Joshpow »

:D Hey Guys :D

I got a steering column for my truck and put it in today. It is a 78 tilt. I ran on it for 75 dollars with a great custom wheel already installed. Just got finished test driving it. Everything works seamlessly. The only thing I lack is fitting the trim on the bottom to make it look better. I love it. I will go over the completed wiring changes when it is more daylight so I can see the colors better and post what wire goes where. Let me know if you need the layout of changes required.

Guys,

According to Keith's tilt page he is not certain of the information he has. He still has questions about the wiring and other things. Just see question number three on his page. Just trying to give concrete evidence of the changes to make it work. Sorry I tried to help you guys be certain. If everyone has documented the changes needed, please give them to Keith so he can update his page.

Sorry guys,
Josh

Sorry guys,
No need to apoligize! You are trying to help, and that is great! The more people that document it, the easier it will be for the next guy to find it!

Josh, I for one would love to see your diagram. I got the same ambiguous feeling from Keith's writeup, as there were a lot of 'unverified' parts.

I'm getting ready to do this conversion myself, so any info you have about it would be great!

OK Guys,

For the ones tracking this topic here is my findings. Everything bolts in perfect. The wiring for the column is as follows on my 72 truck.

Black/Red direct match ---------------------------- Brake Light Switch
Blue/Yellow direct match -------------------------- Horn Relay
78 Blue/Black ground to body -------------------- Horn Relay Ground
78 Blue/Red hook to lights ------------------------ Shifter Position Light
78 White/Red hook to hazard flash relay ------ Hazard Flasher Power
72 Dk Blue to 78 Lt Blue ----------------------------Turn Signal Power
White/Blue direct match --------------------------- Right Front Turn Signal
Green/White direct match ------------------------- Left Front Turn Signal
72 Dk Green to 78 Lt Green ----------------------- Right Rear Turn Signal/Brake
Yellow/Black direct match -------------------------- Left Rear Turn Signal/Brake

These are the wiring connections I made to get all signals, hazard lights, horn, and indicator light to work when installing the column in my truck. Hope this is a help to someone who like me didn't find any definite answers for their questions on changing columns. Let me knowif any of this is unclear.

I was wondering, they didn't possibly have a tilt with a three on the tree did they?

I am no expert but I have never heard of a tilt 3 on the tree. You can find the tilt staight column for a 4 speed or the tilt automatic columns I have been told. Howeverthe tilt for a 4 speed is rather hard to aquire. Only hope I would know of is to use a floor shifter and luck up and find a straight shift tilt. Hope I am giving you correct info.

This is just a note for anyone that does a search for tilt. I also did a write up on installing a 79 tilt in my 71. Search for "tilt" by author "dablack00"

thanks
