How to pull a windshield?

Post by farmtruckman »

Anyone know an easy way to pull a windshield? I have the chrome trim on the rubber which I want to save so next question, is how to pull trim?, then, how to pull windshield. This one is cracked so I really don't care what shape it is in when it comes out. Ideas appreciated.

I pulled one not long ago it is still sitting in my basement. The trim can be gently worked out by hand either using a screwdriver with some sort of padding between the screwdriver and the trim. You just have to go really slowly. Once the trim is off you can just cut the windshield rubber and pull it out. Make sure you have someone on the inside so the window does not fall in and break.

I am not sure how to get it out without cutting the rubber. I am sure there is a way that a professional windshield installer might know of. You could try some sort of hooked tool which is padded and bend the rubber up or have someone on the inside gradually apply pressure as you bend the rubber up. The one I pulled was on a scrap truck so I did not care about the rubber.

If your rubber is not any good you can cut it from the inside with the knife like Keiths other thread says from the inside. Then its a lot easier to take the chrome out.

if its bad. and you want to save the rubber. get in side and peel the rubber back and push with your hands on the windshield. start across the top and work both sides to the center.

:D If you havent pulled it yet, I just wanted to put in my two cents for what its worth......I owned an auto glass shop for 20 years, Sold out in 2000, I have seen a lot of crap....On our trucks, it is nearly impossible to pull the glass without cutting the rubber, If you can it is luck only...You must use a box knife to cut around the rubber, the moulding will come out with no problems by slicing easily out side the moulding. Be carefull around the edge of the glass, If you scrape the glass you can start a run or break in the glass, But the old glass is heavy and strong. After the mouldings are out of the way you can easily cut around the glass and lift it out....The back glass can be removed with out cutting the rubber, It is tempered and very strong....Just be carefull this time of year, cold glass and warm hands can shatter tempered glass, scares the crap out of you when it happens....The hard part is replacing the glass / keeping the mouldings in the groove will pulling in the rubber. It takes time.

Salmons i have found if the rubber is still good take a flat blade screw driver and push the inside lip down and push it back beyond the cab lip.

well if you want to save the rubber, and the glass is already cracked
I would just kick the glass out. but cover you face, and protect the hood.

remember that rubber gasket cost more than the glass.

It takes a little longer but a lot safer to take a flat blade screw driver and push the rubber behind the metal lip.
