What kind of brake system is this?

Post by 71 LONG BED »

This is my father in laws '68 F600. There is a master cylander on the firewall and the booster is under the running board. What kind of system is this? I never heard of one like it.

My grandfather has a 74 F600 and it has an air system behind the seat. It's power breaks but I don't know what to call it.

It is funny. I was just paging through my 68 ford truck manual this morning looking for something and I came across an exact diagram of your truck.

It is just called a Typical Air Brake Systems. Only it says it is for a Tractor or Tractor Trailor and gives no reference to an F600.

If you are interested I can copy what you need but I'm sure some of the gurus here can shed more light on this than I can.

So it is an air brake system? I'm pretty sure it's not air brakes, but I've been wrong before. My buddy has a '71 F750 that had air brakes and there was an air pressure gauge in the dash. This F600 doesn't. Would you mind posting a scan of that diagram? I'd like to see it.

That may not be an air brake canister, but vaccum brake booster.

That looks like the indentical brake system that I have on my '68 B-500 bus Olde Skool.
It has a master cylinder on the firewall, a slave cylinder mounted on the vaccum booster (mounted on the frame), and each wheel has two wheel cylinders.

Thanks kaptnkaos! It definatly looks like a vacuum booster. How does the system work, exactly?

That makes more sense. That system is listed for the F600.

Honestly, I am not exactly sure how the system works.

Just that the main cylinder on fire wall feeds the slave cylinder on to the booster, and that one feeds the wheel cylinders.

With 8 wheel cylindersI do know it takes a while just to bleed the brakes... :D
I had to bleed them before I could drive it home.
I picked up a master cylinder rebuild kit, the other day on ebay.
I'm not sure if you have a Shucks Auto Parts in your parts, but they have a commercial parts counter where I can order brake parts.. shoes and wheel cylinders. I'd like to find a place to rebuild the vaccum booster.

I still have to go through my brake system...
Have just been gathering the tools and stuff...
right now, I can't even get the wheels off the bus.
I bought a good floor jack, now have to get some heavier duty jack stands and a 1" drive socket set.
I don't even own a socket or wrench large enough to brake the lug nuts loose. Slowly but surely, I am going through each system on the bus to get it road worthy.
I just picked up a spare engine/tranny core for parts from 71hiboy4x4. Thinking about rebuilding it and having it ready to drop in
Olde Skool.

Good luck with the F-600

I have a full set of repair manuals for the '68 F-series trucks... so let me know if there is any info you need...

Called a Hydrovac the MC on the firewall was a non power unit. It fed down to the Hydrovac unit which multiplied the braking power. Used on intermediate sized vehicles, which needed more brake than standard, but not enough to warrant air brake systems.

A note on your other post in the electrical system forum, That fuze box would be standard for that truck.

Thanks Fred.
That fuse box is the only one or is it in addition to another one? I was in a hurry and didn't even think to look up under the dash to see if there was one in the same spot as they are in the F100-F350's.
