Tutorial: How to remove windshield trim (LG PICS)

Post by FORDification »

I had to remove a windshield today from my crusty parts truck, so I decided to take some shots of the trim removal, in case anyone needed some pointers on removing this trim from a junkyard truck. The only tool you'll need is a flat-bladed screwdriver, and it takes only a couple minutes to remove all 6 pieces (2 upper, 2 lower, 1 on each side).

Here's a shot of the parts truck, with the stainless windshield trim that needs removed:

Image

Start on the passenger side's side trim. Insert your screwdriver along the outside edge at the bottom and gently pry up:

Image

Don't worry...you're not going to bend or scratch it. I've removed this trim from dozens of trucks and haven't bent one yet. You only need to pry out enough to get your fingers on the trim. Now set aside the screwdriver and grab it:

Image

...and gently pull outward (away from the truck) and twist in a clockwise direction. The trim will pop right off:

Image

Now let's get the top one out on this side. Just insert your screwdriver up under the top lip of the trim and gently pry out, just enough to get your fingers under the trim:

Image

Once you get a hold of the trim, just gently pull up while also twisting it in a clockwise direction, and you can work it off all the way across to the center of the windshield, where this piece ends:

Image

Now let's get the bottom piece. Insert your screwdriver up under the lower lip of the trim and pry outwards...again, just enough to get your fingers on it:

Image

Now with this piece you're going to pull down and twist in a counter-clockwise direction, and gently work it off over to the middle of the windshield:

Image

That's it....you're done on this side. You simply need to move over to the left side of the truck and repeat the same process. From start to finish it won't take more than a couple minutes until they're all out.

Image

As you can see, the stainless trim can hide a lot of imperfections. In this case, it was hiding the fact that the entire right side of the windshield gasket had broken away from the rest, leaving a pair of 1" air gaps on top and bottom.

If you're removing trim in preparation for also removing the windshield, here's a couple bonus pics.

Just grab your trusty utility knife and insert it between the glass and gasket about 1/2" (to the depth of the trim groove, which I'm pointing to with the utility knife) and simply run it around the perimeter:

Image

This slices off the gasket lip which holds the glass in place. You'll want to cut the gasket along both sides and across the top, but don't cut along the bottom, as it'll help hold the windshield in place until you're ready to remove it. Here's what you'll see after pulling back the gasket lip that you've just sliced off:

Image

After you've cut along the sides and the top, you simply have to push the top of the windshield out from inside the truck, and then lift it up and out of the bottom part of the gasket. :D

That's it! Class dismissed!

yea thats a good one for sure. i had a different experience while taking off the chrome around my last parts truck. the bottom trim i got loose with a screwdriver and then just pulled away from the trucks left and right side and the trim slide out. the top trim would not com off with a screwdriver. i had to make a pry bar out of a piece of scrap alumnium. i had to pry the top piece from the top all the way across the top of the cab. it would not release until i had the whole piece on both sides pried out of the rubber on top.

Was that trim standard on all Bump trucks or only on specific models (SportCustom, Ranger XLT, etc). Mine doesn't have that trim, and I've noticed that there are a few other trucks without it, either. Do you think the windshields were replaced and the trim never put back?

I assume you do the back window the same way as far as cutting the gasket and pushing out the window.

What I want to see is some pics of someone installing one. I've read about all the soapy rope tricks but would love to see some pics.

Thanks again Keith for all the info you share. That makes this site as good as gold.

I think it has to do with the package the truck came with, cause I have a 69 f-100 custom cab and it has trim on the windshield. but my other bumps are base line trucks and they don't have any :hmm:

Good tutorial, but I do have one question? How do you put it all back together? On mine, the trim pieces were tight to get out, being compressed between the glass and the cab/windshield frame. :? :hmm:

That reminds me. I need to order the window gaskets.
I am planning on replacing my old windshield which has
a long crack along the driver's side. Is there any place
I should get the gaskets? My truck has no trim around
the windshield just the black rubber gasket.

Can yall tell me about the different types of windshields?
This one has a greenish tint with a brownish strip along
the top. It has the metal piece to hold the rear view mirror
on. The only bad thing is a tiny hole with crack about
the size of a (i'm trying to think of something smaller than
a dime but larger than a pea). I hope this can be filled
and not as noticeable because other than the chip it's
a perfectly good windshield.

Also, is the gasket the same for an aluminum sliding rear window
and the plain glass window?

The old tint peeled off easily. It was way too dark but there appears
to still be a layer of tint on the windows. Maybe only the outer layer
came off.

I'm actually not 100% sure I want to replace the rear window with the sliding one.

the trim goes in the gasket before you put the gasket on the windshield and then you install the whole thng at one time.

:yt: Its alot easier said than done, and I replace broken windshields for a living.

If you have about 6 hrs, you can also work the chrome back in after the windshield is back in the truck, but I wouldn't recomend it.

The backglass gasket is the same for sliders and one piece glasses.

:hj: I'm sure there is different brands of sliders. Well, maybe I dunno. which one is the best?? I have had some that were smooth and latched good (no wind noise). I have seen others crooked, jammed, and people fighting with them :? :?
