lug studs into hub/drum

Post by layedout72 »

Should I try the following? A friend told me to do this.

He said to press the hub and studs in, I could get some washers the size of the bolt at it's widest point, thick as possible, or stack them. Put the stud through, put the lug nut on, tighten down with an impact until it is through and solid. The washers keep it straight, and well...not machine shop press time, so no money for that. He said to grease them up as well.

When we break studs at work (tire store) we do exactly that!!!! my only suggestion is to use a different lug nut then the one you plan on running on the truck cause it can slightly stretch the threads in the lug nut!!!!!!

yah, i plan on picking up some new ones for all 4 corners. should i be looking for something more like a "spacer" rather than a washer, or just get a stack of washers?

use a stack of 3 washers oil them lightly oil the nut, If it were me I would use a new lug nut every 3-4 studs I installed. you don't want to damage the threads on your new studs.

didnt work. Got all the way to the "ribs" and it just got too much. that was a 120 psi at speed 4 on my impact. oh well.

either way, I have my front brakes off and one line (passenger side) is a hardline, but the driver side is a soft line with some sort of adapter to the wheel cylinder, into the line. Is this correct or what?

No, front steering brakes need softline to move as you go through a turning radius. Sound like a PO's mickey mouse to me, time is now to make it right.

When you tried to pull the studs in, you had a stack of flat washers used a lug nut with the flat side down.
next try, give this a go, get the stud snug w/ the lug nut. Turn the drum over with a big drift punch and a BFH give the stud a smack tighten lug nut smack tighten this might get them in for ya.

well, it has a soft line, and then a bracket that seems like it mount up to the backside of the dust cover or whatever. and a hardline from there to the wheel cylinder. It honestly looks stock...

Either way, it moves throught ravel fine. So should I undo the brake i've done and just replce both lines and crap?

For your brake lines, the way to go might just be buying both of them new. Then you'll know they're right.
