I put a pump from an '84 F150 on my truck. I read on the bottle of Type F that this fluid was acceptable for Ford automatic transmissions and power steering units up to 1980.
Should I be using something else for power steering fluid in this 1984 pump???

Will the earlier pumps and boxes care if they're run on dexron 3 or just power steering fluid?
I'm curious since I've had enough of the early Ford pumps die on me that I try to run the saginaw pumps whenever possible and I just run dex3 since I buy it by the bucket.

Hydralic fluid as they use in most wreckers, Valvoline makes it, is
best. It don't break down like "ATF". It's easier on the pump and
seals. The Tompson pump "TRW" is a "POS". As you probably know.
It works, at best. The GM pump makes more pressure and it is "QUIET"
I done played around with modifing P/S a bit. A really stupid ass hired
me in the 80's. He made me the director of P/S in his mickey mo

The bottle's wrong. The P/S system takes type F through at least 1990. My 88 Bronco says it in the owner's manual.
I believe he is referring to the Saginaw pump as a GM pump. It truly is a superior unit.
