What is this style of wheel called?

Post by roachrider »

I want to buy a spare tire for the new truck but I have no idea what to call the style of wheel in the picture.

Also, anything I need to watch out for or will any 22.5" wheel in this style work? For example, I know on my previous dually, I had to make sure to get rims that matched my bevelled lug holes so they locked together and the rims needed a hole for the locating pin on the hub. Anything like that on these?

We call them california style wheels or, most of the time, scrap. Guess guys have lots of problems with them and prefer the budd style.

It's called a Dayton wheel.

Yeah, they call those California spoke around here. There aren't really any lug nuts to speak of on 'em, those five nuts force the wedges against the inner lip of the rim and that's what holds them on.
Are you sure that's a 22.5? I've heard of them but have only seen the spoked wheels in 20s, which yours looks like from the pic, but that's only eyeballing it of course.

FYI you can still buy a new truck with dayton wheels if its an extreme base model. I left the tire bussiness several years ago and they were still plentiful in both the 22.5 and 24.5 range. I appled for a lead tire tech with a pretty major transit(over 200 terminals nation wide) company last week and I saw quite a few in trailer application in my tour of the facility .

Those indeed are daytons.

Also they were tube type tires and usually ran 10-20 or 11-22.5.

The budds were tubeless and usually ran 11-24.5 tires on them.

Now that I think about it all our old ex-Yellow Freight trailers are Cali wheels and they're running 11-24.5s.
Still don't think I've run across the 22.5s yet. 8)

Whoa! First off, thanks to everyone for all the replies.

averagef250: What sort of problems do people have with them?

ToughOldFord: These are the 22.5" wheels with 11R22.5 rubber installed.

spartman: These are tubeless tires. They seem to be working fine so I assume they're correct for this rim but I don't know enough to definitively state that.

wt4speed#2: What are split rims and what would be the benefit of replacing them?
Thanks,

If they are tubeless then they are not on split rims . You should be good to go.The only advice I can give is if you have too change one , Dont remove the wheel nuts all the way until the wedges pop and you'll know when the pop loose you can wiggle them by hand. If they wont pop loose with nuts in place , just stand to one side those flying wheel wedge can cause pretty extensive bodily damage.

Yeah, what he said. Actually we loosen all the nuts and whack the side of the tire with a sledge hammer and it'll pop the wedges loose.

I've never worked on them, just heard from others that they're something to stay away from.
