1970 F-100

Post by 1970FordTK »

Hi all, I have ended up with a 1970 F-100. It seems to be all original, including the 360 v8 with two barrel carb. Auto trans, power brakes, power steering, and factory a/c. Bad part is that it has sat without being used for 8-10 years, only good news is the battery was removed when it was parked. Any good advice on what to try on it before turning the motor over when I get it home? :?

Second we love our pictures so :nopix:

lol lol Seriously, welcome from AZ. I would just do the simple stuff like and oil change, drain the fuel and replace the fuel filter. Might get lucky

:yt: if its been sitting for that long, my mistake was starting it up when the cylinder walls were dry and i blew a couple of rings. find some marvel mystery oil or some type of penetrating fluid and spray it down your spark plug holes and let it sit for a while before trying to start it. clean the carb a little, fresh gas, change the oil, if anything else appears to be pretty warn out like hoses and battery conections and spark plugs and wires replace them. it should run fine for a while

:wel: I think the most important thing would be to do like lightning_msd said and put some oil in the cylinders from the top. The rings haven't moved in 10 years, they are prolly stuck to the cylinder walls. Use a penatrating oil so it finds it's way past the rings. When it does finaly turn over it will smoke pretty bad. After it runs for a few minutes, change the oil. The rest of the "tune up" items are a good idea, too, ie: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, and don't forget to check the gap on the points. (May have to file them to clean them up) It's a pretty good feeling when you save an old Ford!

Amen! This make four lol. We are gaining. Welcome to the site man. Checking the basics is a good start. Clean what you can and check the rest. Should be ok if it ran when parked.

Dang, I almost got excited for a second. I saw that wannabe Texas flag and I saw 'TK' at the end of your ID and thought it said 'TX' for a second. But no, it's just another dang Tarheel.

But despite all that, a big Texas :wel: to you.

Take your time with getting that truck going, take precautions and you might be pleasantly surprised at how good it will be despite sitting for some time.

1970FordTK,

Welcome! You are in the right place! We are glad you're here.

Like they all mentioned already...mostly making sure it is lubricated. Imagine that thing sitting for 8 years with no movement...gravity takes it's course and all that lubricant runs down hill...leaving them cylinders bare and dry as a bone.

But, that was all mentioned already. I'd check that gas tank too...if it smells like varnish, don't use that stuff, try to syphon it out, drain it or completely remove tank and clean it first...that stuff will gum you up quicker than a mouth full of hubba bubba.

Anyways, Welcome!
