SCARY
i was checking my power stering fluid yesterday when i pulled on the hoses and my whole steering box moved. so i crawled under neath to do some investigating when ifound that the bolts holding it on were three threads from coming off. and the previous owner must have swapped in another box when he put power stering in it. because there is a piece of metal plate welded into the frame with the steering box bolted to it. and the bolts don't even fit on the box flanges.

re: SCARY
scary is right and scabbed is a good word for that type of workmanship.any time i find something like that i have to go over the entire truck to see what else might be amiss.
and people ask me how come i get so dirty just looking at a truck for sale.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

It's for this exact reason that I take such a hard stance against putting a power box on a highboy. I cannot count how many of these trucks I've inspected that have had a 2wd or 78/79 box added with horrible workmanship. An unsafe steering box is a disaster waiting to happen.
I put the crappy 2wd box on my '70 first thing when I got it. It doesn't fit right no matter what you do. I had to angle it just right so it would clear the leaf spring and barely leave enough room to run a supercool radiator after some cutting. It had the turning radius of a bus so I lengthened the pitman arm to get full steering from the truck. Put about 40K miles on the truck with that steering setup. Every 500 miles I had to re-tighten the bolt clamping the steering shaft joint to the box input. The angle was apparently too steep and the slight bind would work the joint loose on the splines every 500 miles.
