Weird thing going on here...

Post by blue68 »

Okay...what would cause my '68 F100 2WD SWB (P/S, P/B) to start steering really tightly all of a sudden. It's been driving really nice and loose before (you could steer it with your pinky), but now you have to man handle it with two hands, especially when moving slow. It has a new P/s pump, pump cooler, P/S lines, Re-built steering column, new rag joint, etc.. and there's plenty of fluid in the tank...Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks So Much!!!

If it suddenly started doing that, instead of gradually over a period of time, then I'd say your pump is probably going out. Or there's air in the system. Does it appear as if there are air bubbles in the tank when it's running? If you let the fluid level get too low and start sucking air before you topped it back off, you might need to bleed the system to purge the air.

You might check to make sure the belt is tight and not slipping.

most likely you have air in the system. Make sure you dont have the hoses crossed up either.
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.

I know when I changed my rag joint my steering got a lot tighter. Don't know why, but it did. I loosened the bolts just a little and it loosened back up a little. Not as much as before, but it was better.

I would say if you just replaced the pump and all, it probably has air in the system and needs bled. Cost free starting point at least.

i also think its an air issue.otherwise the pump is suspect or could be a bent/ kinked hose.

excellent avatar btw.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Soo.. I drove the truck 15 miles today and it got quite a bit better. Its almost like something is fixing itself. So, I'm guessing it's air. So how Can I get the rest of the air out of the system, 'cause I can feel some more in there. Just keep on driving it?

i think if you jack the truck up and turn the wheel all the way each way two or three times that might do it.
