Column question

Post by mjhaltom »

I recently bought a junkyard Saginaw PS setup, but the column is broken. I have a manual 3 speed column in the truck now. Can I swap the shaft only out of the PS column into the manual column? Will I have to shorten the column housing? Any other problems ya'll could warn me about?

Unless I'm wrong, the saginaw gearbox is about 2" longer which will protrude into the cab if you keep the same column.

Right...the PS column shaft is too short to fit in a MS 3-spd column. You'll need to find a PS column housing...or a 4-spd column (if you've got a floorshift), since the 4-spd columns are already short enough to accept the shorter PS column shaft.

:yt:

The connectors for the turn signal wiring changed in late-year `69, switching from 2 connectors to just one (same number of wires though, I believe) so that could cause a bit of problems if you're swapping columns (doesn't sound like it, though).

Other things are to replace the small parts while you got it apart; bearings, bushings, rag joint, etc. Might as well if you're taking it completely apart, but that's just my :2cents:

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
