New guy says HI-- and a question
Hello,, I'm new and very happy to find this place..
Hope I can get a question answered that I should know but don't..
I took off the front right brake drum on my 4wd 1972 F100 and the outer bearing race had about an 1/8 slop in the groove that it sets in,,, I'm assuming it is a machined groove in the hub section, has sharp edges, seems to be machined in.. Is this good or bad, is it supposed to be loose or should it be a tight press-in fit.?
When I put it, or a new one, back together with new bearings/races, what is the amount of movement//tolerance I should leave when I tighten the bearings. I plan on doing the left-side also..
Thanks

Hello and welcome
Now for your question...
the bearing race should be a press fit into the hub.
If it is not... That is definitely a problem
as for torquing the hub nuts, you have to torque the inner preload nut to 50 FT-LB while rotating the hub to seat the bearings, then back it off 90 deg.
Then install the lock ring making sure that the pin in the preload nut has found its way through one of the holes in the lockring.
Now install the outer lock nut and torque it to 80-100 FT-LB and viola a properly set up 4x4 front hub...

Yup, I knew I'd like this place..
Thank you all for great info..
Now I know I gotta get at least one Hub and bearings/races.. Does anyone have a favorite place for getting these 1/2 ton parts..
I inspected and mic'd the spindle and I found no obvious worn or damaged spots..
Hey John, HF, I am just up the road in Apache Junction, 6 years here via Frisco... The rigid part comes from 30 years of building rigid frame HD's...
Thanks so much

re: New guy says HI-- and a question
a very interesting story related to the bearing and hub:
last year when i got new tires installed on my 4x4 ,on the way home i noticed a wobble on the right front when i stepped on the brake.since it had never done this before the next morning i had my truck towed back to the tire shop.after careful inspection we found that a pin in the auto locking hub had come loose and got stuck in the bearing and caused the race to start spinning in the hub.i had spindle hubs at home and was not going to pay for one from a junkyard.the mechanic got a new bearing and race and cut up a red bull can to shim the race tight in the hub.i drove home no problem and installed one of my used hubs.the other hub with the red bull shim is out in my shop and is very tight.
i would not drive anywhere else on it but it got me the 60 miles from the tire shop with no issue.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
