wanting power brakes.

Post by bryantracing460 »

I want to put power brakes on my 69. I have the booster and master cylinder, and apart from the proportioning valve, what else do I need? I have read on here something about the pedal assembly being different on the 67's. Please help.

i don't think you need the propotioning valve if you are just putting on a booster and not disc brakes. if you are putting oon disc brakes then you do need it.

 sorry man, but i was wondering if a manual disc brake system would use a prop valve. I did some research on previous posts and I think I will be able to indentify which one I have (straight through or prop)
thanks for your time though, your knowledge is greatly appreciated.

With a 69 getting the p/b conversion you won't have to worry about the 67 issue. The pivot point on the 67's is different then all the others. As for the proportioning valve, that will depend drum/drum disc/drum disc/disc ? and how well the brake system performs.

so all I have to do is take the old master cylinder off, and bolt up the new brake booster and master cylinder?
I am also adding disc brakes, but they came off a truck with manual brakes.

if your making them power brakes then you do need to install the proportioing valve.

i was sure only disc brakes used the proportioning valve.
as far as all the trucks that i have worked on, drum and power drum have just the connector for the lines, while disc or power disc had the prop valve.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

OK, let's get this straight....

Drum-brake trucks use a distribution block, disc-brake trucks use a proportioning valve. Both are completely independent of whether the truck has power brakes or not. Drum brakes need the distribution block, disc brakes need the proportioning valve.

Adding a power booster changes nothing. Disc brakes still need the proportioning valve, drum brakes still use the distribution block. If all you're doing is adding a power booster, no changes at all need to be done to either of them. All you're doing is making it easier to apply your existing brakes.

The only time you need to replace a truck's drum brake distribution block is when you're adding disc brakes. You do not install a disc-brake proportioning valve on a drum-brake setup, or vice versa.
