brake lights switch

hey guys im having trouble with my brake lights. i have a circuit tester. i tested the brake light switch. is it suppose to light up on both parts of the switch when the brake is pressed.im just getting the circuit tester to work on one side of the switch. thanks in advance

Use a continuity tester across both terminals of the switch. When the plunger is out (pedal depressed) there should be continuity across the switch. If you have contuinuity across the switch, you may have a bad ground or broken wire between the switch and the brake lights.
Do your turn signals work OK? The brake lights actually run through the turn signal switch, too.

Yes, the tester should light up touching either side of the switch and ground.

Sounds like you found your problem.

thanks guys i went out and checked the switch. took one off a parts truck i have. but when i went to take a the on off my truck. it was loose i tighten it up works great now. thanks
