ADDING BOOSTER, EVERYONE READ!!!!

Post by fonzf100s »

Just wanted to let you all know, especially Keith, what I was told in this thread was we had to get the booster, bracket, AND pedal assembly from a donor truck to add power brakes to our trucks. No one mentioned that, except for FORDMAN in a reply to my post:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... p?t=14030t.
Thought it might be handy for everyone to know if they just get the booster and bracket from a '73-'79 truck, the pedal won't hook to the rod from the booster. Thanks,

Fonz

Hey FORDMAN, I wasn't doubting your word at all, I just didn't see that part when I read about adding a booster, and I thought if that was overlooked, it might be something Keith would want to add in there. Thank you for you info, and if you know where that thread/ article is could you send a link??
Thanks,
Fonz

Will the '73-'79 pedal fit the bumpside trucks? I'd really like to get the low pedal. Out of 2 or 3 parts trucks, I've never bothered to pull the brake pedals before I sent them to the salvage.

It might very well have been, although the tutorial has changed. There was an earlier version of a tutorial for just adding power brakes, and now the only one I h've been able to find is the one on disk brake conversion. BTW, you are right, it would be a good idea to get the pedals and all. Thanks for the replies and helpful info, also for anyone who wants to know what year my truck is for info, it is a '69.

UH-OH!! I grabbed everything but the pedal! I didn't know either.
So, I can't put the booster in without it? Image

You may be able to, just depends on your particular setup. i.e. auto, manual, adjustable rod. But if the rod from the master cylinder doesn't reach the pedal, do as I said if you have a manual tranny.
Good Luck,

I've been planning on a disc swap into my '69 also. It was an original 3 spd truck, but when I bought it, it had a 351C/C6. It now has a 351W and C6. When I bought the truck the old clutch pedal was already gone. It has manual brakes now. How can I tell if I have the right pedal? The P.O. might have just removed the clutch pedal or he might have replaced the whole nine yards with an auto pedal. I wish I could contact the P.O. of the truck to ask him about what he did but he is 6 feet under now. I do have the bracket that goes between the booster and firewall from a '69 with power brakes.

Hi Randy,
The booster you have pictured is the "lever" style, which sits the booster higher in the engine compartment for FE engines to clear the valve covers. I put one of these on my '69 stepside that is a manual transmission, and it hooked up, but put my pedal closer to the floor than it should have been, although it was still very driveable. You can try it and see. Do you have a manual, or auto in your truck? Hope it works for you,

I have a C6 auto tranny in it now. It came from the factory with a 3 on the tree. The guy I bought it from put the auto in the truck. I just not sure about what he did to the pedals.

The booster got like yours was from an auto in the junk yard, so try it, it may work fine.

from what i remember reading hear is that the brake pedal is needed because of the bolt hole size on the booster and the pedal. its easier if they match up. if one of the holes is a different size then you will have to try and rig it up or drill something out or get the matching pedal.
