If I'm thinking of the correct tranny, that cone at the top of the transmission cover unscrews, use channel locks or a pipe wrench.

Don't you push down and turn the cap just with a firm grip? I has 2 keeper pins that it is held in by spring pressure or something It's been a while.

Yep, that looks correct. I might be thinking about a different tranny. What I'm thinking about is where the tope cone is a thin steel cover that has four straight edges to grip, but it's not really square.

Okay, I think this clears it up, it looks like the T-18 used two kinds, I found this site that shows both:

The early type that 460Crew posted:

And the later one that I was talking about:

I'm probably remembering the later one as my '79 was the last T-18 I've worked with.

If your reverse is away and down I think you have a NP435 wich will have a stamped steel ring with a cam lock just as you said push down and turn

But all the T18's I have seen reverse is over and up so I think you have a 435

I got a shifter from a 75 that had the T-19 with reverse to the passenger side and down and it had the screw on type retainer.

Fit just like a glove on my 67 T-18 box.

The other style I believe was only used for NP 435's
