1968 Manual Steering column...too long for 95 F-150 XL seat

Post by dapopes68 »

I need help figuring out how to get a 1995 F-150 XL bench seat to work in a 1968 with manual steering. Seems that the column is too long because the seat seems to be crowed underneath the steering wheel.

I saw the column article to make the column shorter....I just don't have the tools or skills to do this. Is there another way?

Also, I think it would work better if I pulled out the cab gas tank and put in a after market tank....alot of dollars though.

Would bucket seats work best? Out of a Aerostar or Windstar maybe?

Does anyone have any links for me to go to for seats or gas tanks? I have Googled for them, but not much luck for 68 F-100s.

What do you suggest?

Any help is appreciated,
Rob

Did you use your original bench seat tracks? They'll bolt onto the '95 seats and then bolt down into the factory location on the '68. If you bolted them in using the '95 brackets, then yes you're going to have problems. It's not that the column is too long....it's your seat that's sitting too high. Shortening the column isn't going to give you any more room under the wheel, it'll just make the wheel farther away from your chest. You need to lower the seat.

....or install a tilt column. ;)

Here's some reading for you:

Yes, I used the original tracks and bolted them onto the 95 XL seat.

What I did today is bought a seat combo out of a 99 Dodge truck. They will fix the width problem and the height problem, plus the shifter not going into reverse problem. But I think I need another set of original seat tracks to go on the passenger bucket side.

Will report on how it goes.

Thanks,
Rob

Hope it all goes well. The issue with the gas tank is I going to use a fuel cell mounted in between teh rear rails and then put a filler neck in the inside of the bed floor or something along that lines. But yes you are talking a couple hundred dollars for that.

My father in-law used a tank out of a mustang. I wish I could remember the year. It fit right between the framrails of his '56 F100. The filler is in the bed floor. Pretty nice set up. :D
