Why does my front tire slant in?

Post by RandyBee1 »

I just replaced my king pins, radius arm bushings, drag link, tie rod end and center link on my 73 F100 suspension. Now I notice when the truck is jacked up the right tire slants in real bad from top to bottom. I'm thinking I need new springs? Any suggestions? I can't say if the tire slanted in before I did the suspension work, it probably did, I haven't had the truck that long and probably just didn't notice

By the way, the king pins were a breeze to do!!

Thanks

do you have TTB, if so that is the way the suspension travels, but if only one side is doing it your caster/camber may be off. check with the specs keith has on the main site. If you have a solid axle then i would say your tie rod ends may need to be adjusted or your king pins are slanted .

Since you have the twin i-beam suspension, it travels independently. If you jack the truck up your going to see your tires will look like this \ /
It's normal..and then when you compress the springs again it should go back to the correct alignment | |

Yeah those foreeign cars are proclaiming
"Industries First Double Wish Bone Independent Suspension"!

So what was Twin I-Beams two popsicle sticks cantelevered? No they are the original Independant Suspension. So you can get on an uneven or gravel road and still ride pretty nice.

Looks like a camber problem, some shops will bend the axle to bring it back to spec, but the right way is to replace the axle. just DO NOT try to bend it yourself.

Yep, thats normal if jacked up. It's even possible
to see that a bit when on the ground, but in weird
parking situations.. The true test is tire wear.
If the tires are wearing even, I wouldn't worry about
it. If it was aligned after you did all the work, I'm
sure it's probably ok. It's pretty rare to have to bend
an axle. Usually, changing the front end parts like
you have done will put it back right. Usually, if it's
never been bent by hitting something, it should be ok.
You will be amazed at the difference in tire wear from
a shot frontend, to a rebuilt one. I did a total rebuild
on my 68 on about 2001, and the tires are still pretty
fat and even. Before I did that work, it ate tires like
crazy.

Well, I went back to basics and made sure everything was put back together right and tight. I measured the toe and I was only about 2 inches out!! I set it to within 1/8 of an inch in and now the tires are perfect!

Good Deal. Nothing like perfect or near perfect alignment. I've always done my own where i could. Had a 77 Nova ate tires like mad and I replaced all those suspension parts and viola!

Just as good as factory.

When you jack the truck up the wheels slant out at the top. Also when you turn the wheels the inside side will tip out at the top and lower that side of the truck in a turn.

King Pins yuck My driver's side was frozen and I drove the truck for a year before I found out. It ate the steering gear box when turning left. Turns out I was the only person that could steer the truck left. It took a torch, 30 ton press and a Semi truck suspension shop an hour to get the king pin out of the I-Beam

when i replaced my king-pins, radius arm bushings, axel pivit bushings, coil springs, and shocks. it sat like that for a while . i set the toe and as i drove it, over time the suspension settled. now it sits perfect.

Yea, the kingpins in my 68 were like that.
I had a torch, and the whole weight of the truck
on them. No go..I finally gave up and took them to
a shop to be pressed out. I don't know if they had
any problems or not... They didn't mention anything.
I need to do the kingpins in my 74, but it's hard to
work up the energy... :( It's got nylon in it now,
and I'm almost tempted to just plop a set of nylons
back in it to save time and work.. But the nylons
don't last as long as the bronze.. But probably longer
than I'll have that truck... I'm thinking about trading
it for a dinky 4 banger wagon of some type..

I tried nylon bushings in my 68 F100 SWB after I moved down from the desert to the city. The truck wasn't being abused as much and I had to go to sea (US Navy) every other month for a week or two so I didn't want the truck in the shop. It did't work out even in town. I got maybe 3 months on the nylon before the slop came back. So after the workups and cruise were over I got the metal bushings installed. In southern CA that was painful. $200 for the work and my Kingpins would just slide out. The parts were even more than what I just paid for my 69 F350 and $48 to get the stuck pinout of one side and $10 to do the bushings.
