Some folks prefer the rock hard, solid pedal feel that non-power brakes provide. The "whoosh" sound and gooshy pedal action that power brakes are associated with doesn't appeal to some people. I can remember thinking power brakes were dumb the first time I heard that "whoosh" sound.

Yeah, ...and I can't stand automatic transmissions neither. :)

I think I can see where they are coming from, just don't agree with 'em. :/

When your vacuum is suddenly gone the brakes don't feel like they work! LOL :)

It's not the same thing if you are used to non-power brakes, no surprise
it takes some doggone pressing and your mind and leg are ready for it.

Same with power steering when the engine dies it suddenly feels next to
impossible to steer, no big deal, it's just the sudden difference that's got
'em fooled into thinking there's a problem, the only problem is, their
expectations. ;)

Took my belt off the power steering one day because I couldn't keep
fluid in the pump. :/ Drove it like that for 2+1/2 years after pumping
the steering gear full of STP.

No big deal, just kinda hard on the coupler and steering column. :)

ps- Always wondered how much effort it takes to move the diaphragm
(or whatever) inside the booster, when the vacuum was gone.
Anybody know?
pps- Power steering is geared different than manual steering, didja know it? ;)
ppps- My parts truck, the only thing missing is the engine and one perch...

No power brakes on that 155" sucker. ;)

I think I might be coming around on the whole manual brake thing. My MC was shot so I had lousy manual brakes so I never enjoyed true manual brake bliss.

Since my wife tries to use the brake on her side a lot, could I put on one both sides and have wife assist?

My truck had power drums and I'm glad I converted over to power discs and I know it will bring more money because of that improvement if I ever jump projects which I'm bad to do...I've owned tons.

A cowgirl friend of mine came by my place one day after being up in the mountains hunting elk for
over a week and every time she parked she parked on a hill because the starter wouldn't turn over.
'75 F350 super camper special with the spare in the fender.

Anyway she cleaned the battery terminals but didn't do any good.

Her's was one example of the "little clamps" on the "big clamps" that wasn't carrying enough current
to run the starter under load. No meter, no real-world electrical information.

----------------

I had a "one lung" hand-crank motorcar on my Bowie signal maintainer's district, never got to ride in it. :/

To go backwards you killed and restarted the engine in the other direction, sometimes a guy could get
good at it and hit the ignition switch as it was dying and it'd re-start going the other way. It got given
away within a couple months of me getting the district, danggit. :/

My boss gave it to the B&B when the bridge gangs ran their motorcars together up near Clifton.

I was talking to one of the new guys that got a broken arm in the deal and he said "there were nine
of us, we were riding along, just came out of tunnel number ? and all of a sudden I was the only one
in the motorcar! :)" -Leroy Burrell (he switched to the signal department right after that)

Anybody here actually own a hand-crank start vehicle? :)
That's the closest I came to it. :)

This whole discussion about removing assisting tech is baffling to me. I have the big booster on my 72 (camper Spec with vented disc's) and when I swapped out the engine to the 85 EFI, I used the P/S pump from the 85. You can brake my truck with just minor pressure on the pedal and hold it at lights with the weight of your foot and steer it (even sitting still) with two fingers. Pure bliss , a real pleasure to drive.

Instead of removing stuff that is performing sub-standard or broken, why not fix it.

Kinda sounds like "I got a flat, think I'll run the car on its rims"

why not fix it{? <--fixed that for ya;}
There's nothing to really disagree with there, but sometimes, maybe
not in this situation(?) ...simplifying stuff is cool or even good.

My '75 Super-Cab F100 parts truck came with front disk brakes and
no "power brakes" right from the Ford factory but did have power
steering that included a steering gear that didn't have bearings in it,
right from the factory too. ;)

It was cool to pick on the OP's idea and never hurts a thing but at some
point it wouldn't hurt to see the original idea's merit.

"simplifying the design"

Completely removing the front brakes from a dune buggy for instance. :)
They won't steer at all with the front brakes on and they go on at the
first touch of the brake pedal when compared to the rear brakes.
Kinda sounds like "I got a flat, think I'll run the car on its rims"
[/quote]

"Kinda" at best ...more like "no, not really at all". ;)
See it now? :)
