Spring rate is based on wire diameter, coil diameter and spring pitch. Load is then based on number of coils.

In '69, for example, the stock Ford F100 front coils were available with 1055, 1175, and 1265 lb. spring rates. The F350 springs were available in 1365 and 1430 lb. spring rates. Umm... those are weight ratings right? Not spring rates....? Cause the 450lb spring rate coils for my BII are damn stiff... I'd think a spring with a 1,000+ rate would be like a 4x4 block of wood between the axle and frame..
