Prep for hurculiner

Ok guys I know I want the spray on bedliner but there's no way I am paying $300 for rhino liner so I got a can of hurculiner after hearing alot of pausitive posts on this stuff. How do you prepair the bed??? I have a grinder and lots of sand paper. LET MY HAVE IT

More or less you rough up the paint, they say you can do it with sand paper or steel wool. I used 100grit sand paper on some stuff I did. IIRC you also need paint not bare metal so if you have bare spots you need to paint them then sand the paint. After all that you take acetone or xylene and clean it all up good.

If you buy the gallon kit from NAPA or whoever it tells you right on the can everything you need to do. I put it on a grille gaurd and nerf bars and it worked great.

220 grit or rougher, and acetone. wipe on, wipe off, roll ur stuff on.

I've put it in both my cabs and in the bed of my 67. Like others have said, wire wheel, sand paper, acetone or whatever. Also, wear a long sleeve shirt; that stuff is pretty messy. Here's photos of my 67's bed.

Everywhere Herculiner goes the paint has to be roughed up. IIRC they want it to be hazy after you wipe it with the acetone.

Yea, the rougher the better. You also might want to buy one of those paint mixing attachments for your drill motor. You can get them at Home Depot for a few bucks.

I will be doing this to my truck.. but I have no idea what is under the numerous layers of paint so I will be stripping it down to bare metal. Are you saying herculiner does not attach well to bare metal? And that I should paint the metal, then scuff before applying?

I specifically called the Herculiner company several months ago asking about prep, since I also wanted to apply it to bare metal. They told me not to, that I'd at least have to have a coat of epoxy primer on bare metal. They said as long as you roughed up existing paint it would adhere just fine, but if you were planning on going down to bare metal, they said I'd have to use the epoxy primer.

Just an FYI guys.... the fella who did the bedliner stuff on my truck used 80 and 100 grit on epoxy primer. He would not warranty the stuff on bare metal.
Epoxy primer or regular paint and a rough surface is what the pros do....

Yep you HAVE to have paint to stick it to. I had one spot that was metal and I just sanded it down, didn't stick, had to paint it and redo.

Do all the above mentioned things and then when you are ready to apply it I didnt see any of this advice mentioned. Be sure and wear clothing that you can throw away afterwards. The rubber gloves are mandatory not an option when using the Zylene and herculiner. Nothing will take herculiner off you, not even Zylene which I promise is a bad idea. A 1" brush and a 3-4" brush and a small 4" roller work good. Good luck Charles
