vinyl dye

does this stuff really work and last? is it a spray paint or what? does it wear off? how good does it work on arm rests? will it fade in the sun? is there a good brand and a so so brand? what did i forget to ask about it? patrick did you dye that dash yet? if so how does it look?

i know years ago my dad got some carpet dye and it was a spray paint. he said he didn't like it very well.

fordman, I was just wondering the same thing about dyes. Especially on armrests. Great minds think alike.

The vinyl dies I've used came in a spray can and seemed to be much thinner than spray paint...I think that's so you can keep the integrity of the grain pattern---but they also don't hide scratches too well either...The stuff they sell at an auto paint supply is much better than what they sell at Autozone...You have to give several coats if you're covering light over dark or vise-versa...I've painted armrests before,and they turned out great,but I didn't keep the vehicle long enough to know how well it holds up to a lot of hand-grabbing....

We bought some stuff called Specialty Performance Products SB12 from my PPG supplier, when I did my daughter's pickup...it seemed to go on pretty nice, and we used an adhesion promoter under it. So far, she's happy with the way it's holding up, but time will tell. It sure looked nice when we got done!! It had just the right gloss!!

I used some Dupont die on the Torino years ago and it has held up ok. Actually I've use some of the arrosoll type purchased through NPD on the mustang and it seemed to go apply nicely. I think the biggest thing is getting the vinyl really clean before application. I used some vinyl prep on all beforehand.

The dyes are not good for seat covers. Parts that doesn't get a lot of wear and tear are not too bad. Seat covers and arm rest would not be good to dye. Dash pads and door panels wouldn't bee too bad. Just if your gonna use them make sure to prep the material and follow the instructions.
