Front Cab mounts

Post by ponyexpress »

Hi guys, I just surveyed the bottom of my cab to see what condition it was in and what should be done. The front cab mounts are rustier than I thought and I believe they should be replaced. I am a decent welder and have replaced floors before but have never replaced cab mounts where the holes have to line up where the body is bolted to the frame. Anyone have some good tips or ideas how to proceed to replace the front cab mounts. How do I make sure that the holes are in the right place and the cab will sit level on frame. In other words, How can I assure myself that the front cab mounts are replaced in the correct position ? Thanks for any help or tips. :fr:

I am nearly done with this same project, so I'll chime in. Are you planning to completely remove the cab? I did not, however my floor was bad, so I drilled out the spot welds on the firewall seam and the "front" of the mount. Underneath, the frame covers the spot welds nearest the tranny hump. This was not a problem since I was hacking out that section of floor anyway. May be a problem if preserving floor and trying to work with the cab just spaced up off the frame like me. The way I did it, I left the rear mounts bolted to the frame, made spacers for the front and tacked them in place while working. I was able to maintain rough cab alignment. I will then bolt the mounts to the frame, and lower the cab onto them gently. Verify my dimensions, screw the mount on with self tappers. Unbolt the mount, and lift the cab again and weld them in place. Since I cannot weld the seam under the floor pan due to the frame blocking access, I will plug weld from inside the cab where necessary. Then everything gets seam sealed and painted. The dimensions I took were from frame rail to the inside of the rocker as far as where the cab should sit. There's other ways I could think to measure it, but that worked best for my method. I can't swear by the finished product yet, because I'm not done, but I'm confident it will worked out ok. I think the factory tolerances where pretty loose to begin with. So the short answer is that you first need to decide if you are completely tearing down the truck or not.

I believe where you purchase your parts from helps a lot to. I choose to pay a little extra just to get a better fit. Not here to advertize for them but i had purchased Dennis Carpenter mounts and they fit like a charm.

I have already taken the cab off of the frame so i could paint the frame. I found one cab mount with the parts that I received with the truck but after looking it over, it looks nothing like the original. It is from Taiwan. I plan on purchasing the Dennis Carepenter repos Made in USA. From the picture in their catalog, they look just like the original.

I have set of those DC mounts I bought for Frankie, my 68 F100 that's now a trailer. I figure if I ever need cab mounts for Frodo, my 69 F250, I'm all set!
