1968 F250 Identity crisis from Australia

Post by TAZ »

Hi TAZ here from Hobart Tasmania, AUSTRALIA and no I do not have Tasmanian Devils in my back yard.....

I have inherited my father in-laws 1968 F250 dual rear wheel truck with about a 4 meter tray (thats 12ft for you fellas), I am having trouble getting accurate information on it. The VIN plate has perished some what and I can only make out writing in the areas that I have not placed in brackets , headings in brackets have been based on Australian built Ford sedans at the time with the last section being based on the USA VIN plate it reads as follows:

Vehicle Prod. ( Body SER. NO.? ) (SIDO No.? ) (Model ? )
AK2JHE 39942 407816 73811D41

Engine (Trans.?) (Front Axle ? ) (Back axle ? ) (Paint ? ) Trim

D M C B L 7

7600 ( GVM in LB ? ) 129 (HP of engine ? ) 4000 (RPM ? ) basing this on American produced F truck VIN plates.

Can anyone decipher this VIN plate and tell me where I can get accurate records on Australian based F trucks,i did notice that going by the identifcation page on this web site it has a 69 grill but is shown here as a 68 model.

It was used as a work truck up until my father in-law passed away 14 months ago, I wish to restore it and maybe add some power steering etc to make it nicer!! to driv, a V8 would be nice :D I will try to get some photos so you can see what it looks like.

cheers and thanks taz

Hi Gents thanks for the replys, the VIN id chart that I was directed to does not match the VIN Plate I have as I think the Australian trucks have there own unique plates see the picture attached.

cheers TAZ

No worries am sure someone will come up with something. I am thinking the bottom three may be the same as what the USA trucks have so 7600lb 129 wheel base or HP and 4000 RPM??

Hi, so no one has given me any info. as of yet so here is a picture of the old girl, I am thinking it could be the equivalent of an American F350 as I can't find any info. on F250 with such a long wheel base and dual wheels. thanks Simon

Do you see very many Ford trucks of the 1967 to 1972 model years in Australia?

If so, there might be a resource in country.

My only other idea is that you try to contact Ford in the US to see if they can point you to an information resource.

It seems obvious that Australia had their own system for VIN plates. Did Ford manufacture the trucks there or were all of them imported?

I think your idea is right but I don't know because no one has any information on out of country f series pickups. I've seen the 1968 Mexican trucks have the 69 grille so it's probably the same with Australian pickups.
