power steering pump leaks

Post by hdrider »

My power steering pump leaks oil, my guess is I need a new front seal, and maybe some new hoses. My question is how do you change the front seal? I don't want to put this back on my truck full of oil just to have it leak. Now, I called NAPA and I can get a rebuilt one for $58 so how about some advice which way to go?

i bought a seal kit for my pump 5 years ago for 5.00 only about three or four seals in it. but you just tap the can off of the thing and the seal is right there. or are you talking about around the shaft? that one wasn't hard either. you have to be able to get the pulley off to do that one that was the hard part for me since it was pressed on.

I'm talking about the one around the shaft. Don't know for sure whats leaking. I guess I don't know what other seals there is. Now when you say knock the can off are you talking about the can that holds the oil where the dipstick goes in? I definetly think there needs to be a tutorial on this cause I can't believe I'm the only one out there with an oily power steering pump and hoses. THanks Paul

yea the can is what you said it is wegded on with the seal. once you get that off there really isn't anything inside to do except replace on or two more o ring type of seals.

The seal is easy. You need a puller to get the pully off. Once you get
the pully out of the way, poke a hole in the seal and screw a sheet metal
screw into it. Grab the screw and pull the seal. Lube the new one and use
a deep socket to tap it in. 8)
