Best way to repair dent in the bump?

Post by heel&sole »

Hello, I had some punk neighbors use a hammer or bicycle handle bar to put a nice dent in the bump on the passenger side between the bed fender well and the cab on my '68 F100 SWB. This was 2 summers ago and I moved out this spring so want to eventually get rid of the dent. The dent is about 3/8" deep, and takes up a 1.5" by 1.5" area. It is the only dent in the truck, other than a few minor dings in the tailgate.

I cannot access the backside of the dent with any tools that I have due to the narrow space between the bed exterior and bed interior. I thought about using one of those Spot Weld Dent Puller kits sold at Harbor Freight, Ebay, or Eastwood; but I was disappointed with the results that another Fordification member posted a few months ago when he used one of these kits on his cowl area.

Another option, if you have a welder, grind down the edge of small flat-washersa bit, weld them on edge in the low spots.
A slide hammer with a J-hook should pull it out.

OK, looks like a dent puller job is the way to go. I appreciate the responses!

Has anybody used a stud puller on a bumpside? When I was trying to pull a little dip in the middle of this graphed 68 embossed to a 97 tailgate I was trying to weld to the embossed FORD part and it would never penetrate deep enough it would just pull right back off.
I use a magne spot stud welder from Eastwood it worked great on thin stuff but it didn't like the tailgate steel I just wonder if I'm not holding it long enough for thicker metal.
