Building a cowl induction hood look

Started on the hood today. Here are a few pics. I started with the original hood.





Some shots of how we will be cutting the web structure underneath. I did not get the top side pics today but will have some Monday. Just so everyone knows what the plan is I am raising the portion of the hood that is raised originally another 3/4". This will give the hood a very subtle cowl induction look maintaining all the factory lines. The hope is when finished it might look like Ford did this at the factory.

Did get the braces cut today that will be welded in to hold the proper shape of the hood when it is cut apart.

It's a 1 time shot unless I use a different hood if this doesn't turn out quite right. We are planning for a 3/4"-1" raise of the hump section of the hood. It will be a tack & stand back, imagine it finished on the truck & decide. Higher? Lower? I don't want too much nor not quite enough but want it subtle enough it will look like maybe Ford built it.

No. The piece for the filler will be spot welded to the original piece as Ford did it. It will be welded solid up the sides & across the top where it joins the original top portion removed. I am working hard at trying to make this look as much as possible as original Ford. I have wrestled with filling all the seams on the truck & always come back to that is part of what makes it look old. We are keeping the drip rails & tank behind the seat for the same reason. I have been very tempted to do the flip out taillight for a fuel filler location with a rear tank. Time will tell on that 1 though.

Want to know the best part of doing this? I will have way more hours into blending all the webbing underneath so that it has a factory Ford look when finished.

Cool. I understand your approach.

Personally I'm okay with the rest of the body seams except for the one across the hood. To me, if there was any one body mod to improve on the breed it would be to delete that thing.

I have three hoods, one is getting a scoop, one is cherry and will prolly stay stock and the other one I was going to do a cowl scoop similar to what you are doing. I don't understand cutting the entire piece off. Why did you cut the line across the front? I had visioned cutting the hood at the body lines going up toward the cowl, raising the rear and then using spear-shaped metal to fill in the gap.

I wanted it to look as factory as possible. I had thought about your approach but thought it wouldn't look right. Too much raise in the rear as opposed to the front. My original plan was to graft another hump on top of the existing hood without cutting the hood. Major issues with figuring out how to support the raised section. Cutting it on the seam allowed me to maintain the seam when finished & I do not need to work on blending the crown into the mod. In concept this is probably the easiest way to go about this. Cut the top off, raise it & put it back on. After that comes working with building what is needed for the webbing underneath to get the support back.

The next issue you will run into is as you raise the rear the rear edge will rotate forward leaving it forward of the original cowl location. Do you plan on going straight up with your "spears". I have worked at maintaining the factory angle. The top will be narrowed up slightly so it comes back in line again. Since my upper piece will move rearward I decided to leave the top at original length which will slightly overhang the cowl area.

I think when the time comes to do your mod you will find many problems / humps to overcome. If you go straight up you will have the angled lower portion going into a straight up. I guess you could start molding from the front blending into the straight up. Also you will probably run into the metal's desire to crease the hood where the stress point is for the beginning of the raise.

See I did this so I could look meaner than you. That way when you outrun me I can at least look cool losing.

The top of the hood is tacked on now. Won't be long & it will be back on the truck. The tacks across the original seam are temporary. They will be removed & the seam in place when it is all finished.
