Will any 5x5.5" wheel fit?

Post by dustman_stx »

I've been looking around at wheels, and I'm noticing lots of 5x5.5" that don't come up when searching for wheels for the 72. Is there something else that needs to be considered? I am looking at something like this:

Image

The only thing I can think of is contact with the dust cover in the center of the hub- any thoughts? The wheels I have now are American Racing Baja 172 that have the large cutout in the center with the deep center cap. I have drum brakes all the way around, if that makes a difference.

the front hubs on a truck are larger than cars. so not all wheels will fit over the truck hubs.

There is not alot of choices for the 5x5.5 bolt pattern. Unless you have some custom made. :pout:

I don't think that any cars had the 5X5.5 bolt pattern did they? werent the cars either 5X4.5 or 5X5? IIRC I believe I have read about some wheels having clearance issuess with the disc brake calipers. I don't recall reading about any issues with drum brakes on the front. As mentioned earlier, make sure that you've got the backspacing that you need.

If you want to see some factory stuff check out the bolt pattern reference here.

Dodge trucks were 5X5.5 but have a smaller center cap than our Fords.

Check. Already ran the numbers on backspacing, but forgot to mention it.

If you have front discs, you can have the center hub turned all the way down to 2 7/8"....I am using some 20" off of a Dodge truck.

If you are running drums on all 4 corners, then pick the offset/backspacing that you want/need. There should not be any fitment issues with any of the 5X5.5" wheels that I'm aware of.

I have drums also. On the front, the hub has a 3" diameter and the mag wheel's center cap is 4 1/2" so there is plenty of room. My thinking is check the specs on the center cap the wheel is using to make sure is is at least 3".

Sounds good. Thanks to everyone for all of the advice. I am thinking they probably designed those wheels for Dodge Rams. I have an 02 Dodge. Think I might measure the 72 and then the Dodge to see if it looks like I'll run into any issues. Then contact the manufacturer to see what size the center cap is on the wheel.

if they are a zero offset wheel they will hit on the big weight that is welded to the outside drum face. i ran into this when running 93-95 lightning wheels on my 68.
