ok, its the gear selector arm that is not letting the column come up far enough,
on the rag itself, i took two nuts and bolts out that hold it to the steering rod,
there are two other big lug things that appear not to be removable on the rag itself, do they come off somehow?
im trying to do it ang im giving her heck but cant get it off.....

no the big lugs dont come off. i had my wife hold the column out away from me when i replaced the one on my 67. what i also did was to pry and compress the rag joint up to the column. to get it off. but mine was also torn and weak. so it was easy to make it come off the steering box. i have my 67 today and i may be making a power steering box swap and column swap in the next few days. so i am going to be doing this work again probably this week or week end. one other thing you can try is to loosen the lower bearing retainer. to let the inner shaft slide up into the column. that will give more room too.

you have the pinch bolt (12 pt - i think its 1/2 " maybe 7/16 or smaller ) out on the ragjoint -true?
if so and the ragjoint won't move pry that sucker apart abit ,shoot it with some penetrating oil and give it a couple of raps with a persuasion device
there's a bracket sitting over the column that bolts to the firewall with a band around it - remove it (and the band)- that'll give you more room to pull the column up
you should be able to pull the column up and use the bolts going to the dash to hold it up -which should (unless your cabmounts have sunk) give you just barely enough room to get the ragjoint out of there and replace it
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

yes i forgot about the firewall plate. remove that first. the lower bearing retainer is on the inner shaft above the rag joint flange.
