brake union compression fitting

Post by onetuford »

Is it really illegal to sell a compression fitting for an auto brake line? I went to NAPA today to pick one up and he refused to sell me one. He said it was illegal. I was able to get a union and some nuts since I own a flaring tool. I prefer to do it that way, but never did in the past. I swear I've bought at least 10 of those in the past to put brake lines together. Anyone else ever heard of this?

yes it is illegal to use a compression fitting on brake lines. that is why they say they wont sell them. but if you tell them your not workign on brakes for a truck they cant say that. you tell them its for something else.

Wow I never knew that untill today. I used to use them quite often for brake line repairs. The parts store I bought them from knew that too. I don't disagree with the reasoning. The two nuts and union were less expensive than the compression fitting anyway.

There is a reason for this.

Compression fittings are not designed to handle the high pressures exerted on brake hydraulics.

I agree with 70 F100. Do NOT use compression fittings. Either replace the line you are trying to connect with one full line or use a double flaring tool to connect with flared fittings.
