Front wheel bearings and race bearings

Need to replace the bearings on my 1970 f100, 2wd. What special tools do I need, If any? Do the bearings need to be pressed on? Any help on this would be great!

to replace the bearings you need a pair of channel lock pliers and some clean rags. as well you will want some grease to pack the bearings.

Pin punch for knocking the races out. Brass punch for putting them back in. And yeah grease to pack them with. Might want to do the oil seal while you are doing the bearings and races.

And be SURE to wear safety glasses.

Striking two hardened surfaces together will usually (in fact, almost always) cause one or the other to chip. That chip will fly through the air at an amazing speed. If it were to hit you in the eye, it can actually penetrate your eyeball and go deep inside.

Blindness is not a good thing...

Another option that I always use is to use the old bearing races to drive the new ones in. They're the right size for driving them in and you don't have to worry about damaging them by hitting them with a hammer.

thanks for this topic, I need to do this to my 72 and the last time i ever messed with bearings was on a 76 monte carlo in the late 80's, I know i should do it every year.
