Hello,
I have researched on this forum, and learned about primary and secondary brake shoes and how they relate to my 1972 drum brake system.
I have discovered that both shoes on my rear wheel are exactly the same width. The new parts I have purchased include 4 shoes that are wider than the existing shoes on the truck. I know that these will be my primary shoes. My question is.......should the brake shoe hold down pin be longer on the primary shoe than on the secondary shoe. Once the pin and caps are installed , I can't budge the primary shoe because the hold down spring is so compressed. Not being able to move the shoe iis keeping me from attaching the cable hook and the final adjuster spring.
What say you.......

Thanks fordman !
I believe I have recieved the wrong size primary brake shoe. A quick and rough measurement of the shoe was a little over three inches.
The secondary shoe measured a little over 2 inches. What will the correct size primary shoe measure ?

I believe the half-ton brake shoes (F100) were the smaller of the two at around 2" like you stated, it's not that the primary shoe is a different width but the circumference of the shoe is shorter then that of the secondary shoe. Give me a minute to check the reciept from my brake shoes and I'll verify the width for you...

The Primary and Secondary shoes are the same width, just different lengths. It sounds like you have a set that is too wide for your application.

Ok I just looked at my brake shoes and the rear shoes are are 2 1/4" in width and the fronts are 3" in width. Meaning that the larger of the two sets of shoes you got were probably for the front axle and the 2 1/4" set are for the rear brakes. To distinguish primary from secondary shoes put the shoes beside each other lining one end of each up with the other the longer of the two shoes is the secondary shoe (that goes on the rear of the backing plate) and the shorter is the primary shoe (goes on the front of the backing plate) Good luck with your brakes!
