Best Wheel Tire Combination

Post by 67_F100 Ranger »

So what do you think about the best wheel tire combination for a stock suspension? Plan to put a slightly beefed up 390 under the hood with a c6. Truck is a 67 shortbed and have been told that 50's won't fit. Any recommendations?

If your talking about 50s on the rear they will fit, had N50s (12.5") under a 68 that i had lowered . i rolled the lip under so it wouldnt rub the sidewall and the sidewall didnt go out past the fenderwell. it was a tight fit and wasnt any room for body twisting but i was useing the truck to dragrace and for cruiseing. i was running 10" rims and dont remember the offset, but if i was going to do it again i would only go 10" on the rear because that would leave plenty of room inside the fenderwells for clearence.

Depends on what look you're going for. I don't like a truck to be slammed to the ground (just my opinion). These are 31x10.50x15. I now have 265/70/R16 which are exactly the same. I wanted a larger tire so I'm not spinning the tires all the time. This is stock suspension on a '69 F100 swb

My 68 had 275/60/15's on 10" wheels with 3-3/4" rear spacing (which most 10's are) and they had been rubbing. 50 series maybe if you can go custom with say 5 or 5-1/2"" back space...

I also will not be lowering my truck. I would prefer a 50 or 60 on the back and figure 70's will work up front. However, I do not want to fight a tire rub issue either so if I can go with a larger tire on the back by using a certain off set wheel that is the direction I prefer to go. Thanks for the the insight. Nice truck mrtleavitt!

what are we talking about here? 60's, 70's? those are aspect ratio numbers. the tire width is the first number 235, 255, etc.
i am running 255's with no problems and have had 275s on the back. i think you could go to a 305 or 315 with the right backspacing, etc.

10 inch wheels with a 5 inch back space works fine. Thats what i have on mine with a 28-12.5-15 Mickey Thompson. It lowered 4 inches in the rear and dont rub at all. I also had a 325-50-15 BFG Drag radial on there before with no probs..

when i was running the 275's i had 4" of b/s and it was close. they were also 17 inch tires and the truck was lowered. there was some evidence of rubbing on the inner fender, but nothing major. almost like sidewall flex in corners. very light rub marks.

i am surprized at the number of people that think 60's are the width. ive even seen men at tire stores tell me at 70's are the width and when i explain that say 235/70 15 are metric being 235 millimeter wide and the 70 is a % from the top of rim to top if tire, i will get a deer in the head lights look from people

While it is correct that the "XXX" is accually the tire with, lets put it this way... if you where to look at tires and wanted something wide would it be a 75 or 80 series??? no, you'd be looking at a 50 or 60 series. right... wether it be a 215 or a 325, in a 50 series it's goiing to be wide in relation to it's height... :2cents:
