Lifted 4x4 steering linkage w/ PS?
The po installed an aftermarket PS set-up in my truck. The steering linkage from the box down differs from the stock set-up. I was curious if anyone on these forums had photos a lifted (3") 4x4 (w/ PS) steering linkage that I could see just to compare to what I have (67). I figured there was a pretty standard conversion for this but to what and with what parts I'm not exactly clear, since both these modifications are pretty common. Thanks everyone, and thanks for help on my axle question. I really appreciate these forums. Again any photos of their steering would be nice if they have a similar set-up to mine.

Holy crappy does that really work? Never seen a set up like that, the gear box is just like my brothers 81 f150, that is some real redneck engineering, most people just drill the extra hole in the frame and mount a gearbox from a 79? Is that right 79 somebody help me out

That's neat. Looks like rube Goldberg made some steering linkage! That stuff is 70's-90's dodge. If you have a death wish and actually drive it like that atleast be considerate of others and allow them the chance to live by staying off public roads.

Re: Lifted 4x4 steering linkage w/ PS?
Here's our set up. '71 F100 4x4, lifted 4" on 35" tires. It has a '74 Ford D44, '78-'79 disk brakes, a '78 PS box (3 bolt) converted for rear-steer (West Coast Bronco's "rock crawler conversion" http://www.wcb4x4.com/tech/diyrockcrawler.shtml), and uses '78 F150 linkage (pitman arm,tie rods, drag link, etc) with a Borgeson steering shaft. I had to drill the frame for the box, but that was about it. It's angled a little more than I wanted, but it was the only place I could put the bolts and still get at them because of the crossmember location on the F100. 2 bolts go through just outside the crossmember (these are the nuts in the picture), they're so close they both actually have to be clocked so the flats line up with the crossmember. The other is just inside the crossmember, reachable from the access hole in the bottom. It took some fitting, but it uses all Ford parts. Everything except the steering box can be replaced directly off the shelf from the local parts shop, and all the parts in the box can be obtained the same way. You just have to put a '80-'96 F150/250/Bronco steering gear in a '78/'79 PS box. Works slick, just like driving a '78/'79 F150. Stops much better than it did with the stock '71 drums too.

it is not a death trap an i have been driving for over a year now . an yes it is mid 80's dodge steering box . there is no binding no wobbles. everything is tip top shape best thing i ever did to her. an i only drilled one extra hole . it is based off of ps kit you could buy using the dodge box with the plate at a cost of $ 800 which i didnt have. the truck runs down the freeway nice a straight . an no i'm not a redneck engineer. all of the steering joints have tons of clearance when rotated from lock to lock this took over a year to design an test . but its solid as a rock

how did you convert the box to rear steer?71F100-390 wrote:Here's our set up. '71 F100 4x4, lifted 4" on 35" tires. Re: Lifted 4x4 steering linkage w/ PS?
that was what i was wanting to know. i have a forward facing pitman arm and i need a rear facing pitman arm. if i use it as is the steering would be backwards. i had considered swapping the internals from the 1977 2wd box i have with the 1979 4wd box but i was unsure if i could do it. but it seems that i need a different box to do it,. i will read that link and see what i cna figure out.

Re: Lifted 4x4 steering linkage w/ PS?
Thanks for all the responses, I think I figured out what the po was doing with the steering now. It appears they were going for the set-up above but without the steering box reversal (which I think is a better idea angle-wise than trying to do it without the reversal like they did).
