PS–When she's turned on she sucks; when turned off she spits

Post by Doug F »

OK, get your mind out of the gutter!

I installed my power steering and am having issues with bleeding it.

So far here's what I have done:

The whole system is sealed and I filled the reservoir on the pump, then I cranked the motor a few times and put more fluid in until it was "full" on the dipstick. I started the motor and my friend said the fluid dropped as I was turning the wheel from lock to lock, so he poured more it... all is good, some foaming (that I remember is a sign of the system working the air out), still turning the wheel, getting everything warm, then I turned the motor off and  Foam shoots out of the filler tube! :x
I look into the tube and I don't see any fluid, so I add more until it reads on the dipstick.

Take 2: Start the motor and the fluid disappears, my friend adds more until it reads on the dipstick, all is flowing good in the pump (from what I could see down the tube), it runs for a while and then turn it off again and :pout: it happens again! (Though this time without foam) about a 1/3 of a qt spits all over, making a huge mess.

:hmm: According to the service manual, it says fill it up to the full line and you're good to go.

OK, so I am guessing when the motor is off, you fill it to the line and when it is running, it isn't visible in the reservoir. Does this sound right?

:help:

Thanks!

i have for gotten what that symptom is. it is either air still in the system or a clog in the system. i know you cant put the lines on backwards because they are different sizes.

Seems like I remember reading here to jack the front off the ground to "burp" the air from the system. (Start / run steering block to block a few times / check fluid).

Agree with basketcase. I JUST went through this earlier this year. Some forum member (thank you again) suggested to raise the front tires off the ground, then turn lock to lock without bottoming out the steering and cycle back & forth several times.

I did this and the steering works perfectly. I will say that after doing this, I had to drive the truck for about 20 miles for everything to work well.

Thanks guys, but that's what I was doing, since I haven't hooked the pitman arm back up yet.

Have you looked inside when the motor is running, then when the motor is off?

:hmm:
