steering column seats sideways

Post by fordelio »

Hi, my 69 F100 4x2 shows its steering column seated sideways so column is not centered refering to the metal cover in the dashboard. I already tried to center it by removing the steering support and external dash cover bolts without any improvement. Please anybody can tell me how to solve this problem? regards, fordelio.

Mine sits sideways a little to. I have a manual steering column with a power steering.

well the steering column isnt centered in these trucks. they do have an angle to them. if it is not a factory look. then maybe the cab mounts are rusted out and the cab has moved or to one side.

Mine is a little to the left, me thinks this is normal on these rigs.

Yep - they all do. If you look at the steering box, it's mounted somewhat at an angle and that angle transfers all the way to the steering wheel. You may also note that the motor is not centered in the truck either!!!

It's because the frame rail that the box mounts to is inboard of where it would need to be to center the column.

:yt: The steering box input is directly over the left frame rail, so if the steering column were mounted in a straight line from there, you'd be sitting closer to the middle of the cab. Here's a schematic from the 1970 Body Builders Layout Book which shows the angle of the steering column:

Been driving my truck for 37 some odd years and never noticed that. Dang, I'll see it every time I get in there now. Thanks

Clint - we don't mean to change the way you feel about your ole' girl. Please note that Ford did not do this with trucks shipped to North Carolina. Your wheel is straight as an arrow - you lucky dog you!

Also, as fordman mentioned, if your cab mounts are rotted/fatigued it makes this condition more noticable. The cab on my '72 parts truck was basically resting on the steering column & it had cocked over a good way from where it should have been. We literally had to jack the drivers side of the cab up in order to pull the steering column.
