Steering Column - NSS

Post by McDays »

I did install the steering column with shifter for automatic transm in my 71 F100 after I did the transmission swap from 3 speed manual for one C6 automatic. What happened is that I removed those bolts where the NSS is connected in the column . So, now I have the ignition key in the dash and the steering lock key in the column. I know that there is one year/model that got the steering column that fits with the NSS then I can use only the column key for start and lock. Can you help me? I am trying to find the thread where is the information but I couldn't find it.

I don't really follow you here. The NSS (neutral safety switch) is not held on to the column with bolts, only a couple of small screws. The bolts that your talking about, on the newer column with the ignition switch in the column, would be for the ignition switch itself. If I'm reading this correct. The NSS has nothing to do with being able to remove the Ignition switch from the dash and use the one on the column. I think I know what you mean because I'm doing the same thing. I have the column installed just haven't hooked up the Ignition switch on the column. If I'm way off base than keep asking and someone will come along to help you.

you can get a transmission mounted nss. it will take the place of the columns nss. and you can use the key in the column to start the truck when you wire it in. though some of the older transmission had a problem with being able to put the nss on the transmission. i don't recall why.

You are right. I didn't explain right. What I'm trying to do is make the ignition key in the column works, but because I cut off those bolts welded in the column where is the switch I could not make the ignition work in the column. So, I got to re-do it with another column and what I need to find out is which one is the right for this change. If I find the right one then will be easy because I had to short 5" in the botton half of mine so the size is right now but I messed up when I cut those two bolts.

I don't know if there is a column (with the ignition switch in the column) that will work in our trucks without modification. I don't think so. The one I'm using in my truck at least doesn't work so I'm going to relocate the ingintions switch to make it work. I'm moving the ignition switch a bit further down on the column and at a slighty different angle. Lets see if it works.

all ford trucks with ignition switches in the column have the nss elsewhere. im pretty sure. unless it is part of that start switch on the lower part of the column. and im unsure about that without looking it up.

The NSS is not part of the ignition switch.

your right i looked it up and forgot to post back about it. it is part of the transmission with the newer trucks. i think it is wired into the brake pedal switch too.
