Excellent photos!!!

Ryan, I thought that your original photos (that started this thread) were very good, but those latest ones are truly professional quality--they look like something that could be sold to a magazine (or to a company for advertising) for some serious cash. Very impressive!

On December 23rd I decided to take a long exposure photo of the moon in the sky, and was surprised with all the colors the camera picked up from the stars. Did the camera pick up genuine colors that the stars were really puttin' out, or did it invent them somehow, because of some undesired optical effect? I'm guessing that it invented them, but I'm really not sure!

Unfortunately these photos don't show the colors very well as they are, but you can really see them if you zoom in (on either the full resolution JPEG, or the Canon raw format image). Note that to read the Canon raw format, you'll need a special plug-in to Photoshop or The Gimp. I'm using UFRaw with The Gimp.

Here's a sort-of close-up that might show the funny star colors a little better (without having to zoom way in). Can you see the red and light blue stars on the left?



Here are the settings I used:

• Canon EOS Digital Rebel
• Aperture: F32
• ISO Speed: 200
• Focal length: 55.0mm
• Shutter time: (I lost this information, but it was around 30 seconds I think.

You know, you could be right about that. I was making a foolish assumption about Photoshop based on my experience with The GIMP. Serves me right for making an overly-convicted statement like that!

So do you think I captures colors coming from those stars, or was this some sort of camera-introduced effect?

Ace, regarding the d3000 pics...
1st shot, great! I love the snowyness!! That's a cool shot, makes me want to be there. Only thing i really see is that you left a lot of sky in the photo, i would of cropped it down a bit because the sky holds no interest for me. Also sometimes it helps to keep the photographers "rule of thirds" in mind, as in try and keep the horizon above or below center. Whichever is more interesting or you want the attention, gets the bigger portion.

2nd shot, tons of potential! Get a tripod, set a 30 second exposure on Shutter priority mode, and let it sit and do its thing. It will help to put it on a timer so you don't press the button, shaking the camera. That shot has potential! I know you had to lower the shutter speed which is why it is blurry, handheld.

3rd shot, awesome!

4th shot, great! I like the feel that you'r holding the camera right there with the rod. The crooked horizon is a little funny but i think that in this shot, it works!It's hard to choose a focus point between the reel being in focus, or the landscape.

I've had it pointing almost straight down before. I'm guessing I was doing 110. Not very aerodynamic, I think it had a little more but not much, Stock straight axle and drum brakes
