New Brake Booster Issues

Post by mark-in-wyoming »

I just upgraded to power brakes on my '67 F100. I used a booster from Autozone that was listed for a '68. I used 67-72 brackets and everything bolted up fine, other than I had to fabricate a section to connect the brake pedal arm to the female threaded shaft of the booster. The problem is that the pedal goes down way too easy. Is there a difference between the master cylinders between the non-power and power brake master cylinders?
Thanks

No, there's no difference in master cylinders between power and manual brakes. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say that the pedal went down too easy. :hmm:

So did this situation just start after installing the booster or was it a pre-existing condition? Did you hook the booster rod up to the brake pedal in the factory position?

Power brakes are going to make the pedal go down easy. Are you sure that you really have a problem?

Prior to placing the rebuilt booster I did have a salvage yard unit, which worked fine other than it had a vacum leak. The pedal with the salvage yard unit felt like it should with power brakes (in my opinion). The problem with the new booster is that there is essentially no "feel" to the brake pedal and you really have to feather the brake pedal to keep from locking up the brakes. I did attach the booster to the original location on the brake arm, but had to fabricate a new end since the booster had the female end going to the brake pedal. The overall travel of the brake pedal is good, but just seems too light. Was a spring ever used to return the brake pedal? I know there is a spring for the clutch pedal, but nothing is on the brake pedal.

no spring. one thing that you seem to have got around is that the 67 booster rod is shorter than the 68 and up booster rod. but that seems to have been solved when you made another rod to fit into the female end.

The rear brake shoe return springs should return the brake fluid pressure back to the master cylinder when you take your foot off the pedal. Maybe check those return springs to make sure they're present and not broken?

Thanks for everyone's help. I will take a look at the rear brake shoe springs and see what that does. May just have to learn how to drive with a lighter foot!

One thing you might take a look at is the rod from the new booster is set to the correct length going into the master.
