Junkyard cost of a disc brake set.
What would be an accurate pricing for a disc brake set-up (for a drum to disc conversion) from a junkyard. Looking for a 73-74 donor truck for a 67 f100 conversion. I live in Oregon, not sure is that makes a difference pricing wise. Also wasn't sure if 4x4 made a difference. The tutorial posted on the conversion procedure appears to only cover 2wd trucks wasn't sure if 4x4 was a more extensive process in both labor and parts.
As always thanks for your feedback.

150 for the basic parts from the yard. and up to 500 for all new stuff like pads, rotors, bearings, hoses, bushings, etc...
I have $550 in my 2x4 disk brakes.

Ok I checked a while back about 2 weeks ago. I wouldn't put all the new stuff on till later because most the time it is still good, other than pads. But it was 150 without the prop valve and master cylinder, so prolly with about 180.

Re: Junkyard cost of a disc brake set.
I bought a complete 79 F100 for $150.
Got the complete front end out from under it to put under my 70.
Parted out the truck, made a profit of $1200, and still had the front end parts.
Found some NORS TRW brake rotors on ebay, paid $40 for two of them, including the hubs.
New bearings are going to cost about $50, including the seals.
Caliper kits are about $5 each.
Once I replace the pivot bushings and radius arm bushings, buy the pads and throw in a can of paint, I expect to have about -$1150 in mine!!

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I paid $50 at a metal scrap yard, NOT a auto salvage, to have them torch a pair of 74 spindles off and gave the kid with the smoke wrench a $10 tip. I paid $25 to unbolt my own prop valve. I paid $40 to have the 74 spindle rear mount boss milled down to accept the stock size (mines' 68) steering link. I paid about $50 for reman calipers and pads.

its a good idea to always replace bearings. You usally have no idea how long it sat in that one position and the bearings will have rust pits all over them or could be bad in the first place.

I got quoted for $600 at the Ford junkyard, the pick n' pull didn't have any disc brake setups. So i put a wanted on craigslist and got the full setup for $60.

Re: Junkyard cost of a disc brake set.
What exact parts would I need to convert my 68 f100 from front drums to disk completly? Also looking for tips on removing the steering wheel and column so I can paint it. The paints rubbed off the wheel and when I drive it I get black stuff on my hands.

Re: Junkyard cost of a disc brake set.
that depends on what year donor stuff you can find. here is a page with more info about the disc stuff. http://www.fordification.com/tech/discbrakes01.htm
as far as the steering wheel you push down and turn the horn ring/button off of the steering wheel. then you remove the nut holding the wheel to the column. so me guys say they can just pull the steering wheel off but i havent been able to lately. so you take a steering wheel puller and pull the steering wheel off of the column.
to remove the column from the truck take a 12 point 7/16 socket and unbolt the rag joint from the steering box inside of the engine compartment. undo the shift linkage. undo the hose clamp (for 3spd columns) undo the other clamp on the firewall bracket. unbotl the firewall bracket from the firewall. no go inside the truck under the dash on the firewall is four more bolts to remove. a 3/8 socket works for this. unplug the wiring harness from the steering column. there may be up to three plugs going to the column depending on the column you have. automatic columns in 67-69 have 3 plugs. the last thing that should be left is the two bolt just under the dash at the top center of the column. 1/2 socket for those 2 bolts. and the column will come out of the truck with a slight pull and twisting motion to get the shift linkage through the firewall.
