Which Side Does the long part of the leaf spring go to

Post by bjde0b »

I'm feeling pretty stupid having to ask this question right now. When I took the truck apart I didn't notice that one side of the leaf spring is longer than the other. I have non-flexomatic springs. Does the short end go to the shackle or the front of the truck.

FYI - I think I did it wrong and I have the short side to the front.

Thanks, and feel free to abuse me.

I can't tell. The actual difference on the spring is a couple inches. I will look at the bump stop mount and see if they will be hitting the axle with the current set up.

I know this is an easy question if someone can run out to their truck with a tape measure. I would greatly appreciate it. I want to get the chassis rolling today.

This is an easy question. Surely somebody has a 67-72 Ford F100 with non-flexomatic springs. I would also asume that same person has a ruler, or maybe if I am lucky, a tape measure.

Ok, BJ, sounds like you have them on-the-right-way, to me, already. :)
The short end is in front! :)

I re-arched my own leaf springs and knew exactly what you were talking about right off.
I painted one side of one pack with spray paint before taking them apart.

Something I want to tell you...
My two leaf packs don't have the same distance from the front eye to axle locating bolt!
No kidding there is a 5/8" difference in the two packs and they are the originals from the
factory and the axle is square with the frame when they are on the sides they came from.

I'm serious about this. :)

I special ordered my pickup when I was 21 years old and I'm the only one that's ever really
worked on it. A guy at the Ford factory in Michigan picked one of those leaf packs out to
put on my pickup -special- to make the axle square with the rest of the pickup. They both
have the same numbers on them and if they were colored-marked to distinguish them at
some point (or labeled maybe?), that stuff is long gone.

Guys talk about buying new after-market leaf spring packs and it makes me cringe. LOL :)

Alvin in AZ wanted a bump-side but Ford wouldn't make me a new one in Nov of '74 :/

Thank you Alvin, it is nice to know I don't have to take them back off. I read before that you said yours were offset. I didn't re-arch my springs, they will probably be fine. The truck had a good stance before I took it apart.

I will measure mine tonight and see if everything is equal.

Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it.

One final note. Does anyone know what the little coin rubber piece is that goes between the leafs in the divots?

Cool. :)
If you do that, at least I'll feel better about the whole restore. ;) LOL :)
You don't know what you'll find until you look.
