Replace drag link and tie rod - 70 or 73 parts

Post by bjde0b »

Which parts do I need to get. The PO replaced the drum with discs. I am assuming the drag link and inner/outer tie rods are from the 73-78 models. So, when replacing drums, do the steering linkages have to be changed as well? Should I order linkages for dent sides?

one thing to watch out for on doing this swap or replacement. is the pitman arm number if the pitman arm number is d2 then you need the 73 and up linkages. i fthe pitman arm is a c9 then you need the 67-71 linkages. also the bracket on the disc brake caliper holder are thicker or thinner on the 73-79 's. so you will have to check that also when deciding which linkages you want to use.

My pitman arm is a D2TA-3590-BA.

I have been reviewing this page (http://www.fordification.com/str-susp_variations.htm trying to figure out what I have.

My I beams are D8TA-9-CA 17 and D8TA-8-CA 8. This number appears to be later than the 75 model and earlier than the 79 model numbers that are listed.

My drag link is the staighter of the two shown in the picture.

The retainer of the stud on my tie rod resembles the tie rod on the left which is defines as the 67-72.

So this sounds like I have a mix of the bumps and dents, but I was under the impression that this isn't possible. How long are the studs on the 73-79 vs 67-72 tie rods and drag links?

well heres what can be done. the earliy draglink can be used with the later pitman arm. but what it does is try and bind when it is steered. at least that i sthe general opinion. i cant get the measurements right now of the newer drag ling studs. or the old ones either. i looked in you pics and didn't see any of your hooked up or any of them at all. how did they fit into the spindles? were they too long or too short on the stud where it bolted up?
