250 frame

Post by killakobra »

my 72 f100 sports custom is sitting on a 70 f250 frame and the front cross member is smaller than the one on my 69 f100 frame.

here's a picture of the 70 frame

Image

was it standard for 250's to be set up like this? and why would the cross member be smaller?

they are different because of heavy dutyness of the two sizes of trucks.

but you would think that the f250 would have the heavier crossmember?

I'm taking a blind stab at it, but would the original engine/trans combo have anything to do with it?

78 Chevy Impala - the race car

I'm sorry if I ask lots of questions, there's just a lot of stuff I don't know (yet).

In my experience '67-'69 had a wider crossmember than '70-'72. My bro has a '70 F100 Shortbed with a small cross member and my '69 F100 shortbed has the larger cross member. I don't know why but everyhting else is the same on the two trucks minus the rear shock mounts.

when i first saw the rear shock mounts i thought the frame was mangled and then i noticed it was symmetrical. i guess they cut down on the cross member to save weight.

original engine was a 390 so i doubt that would call for a small x member

i was out looking at my 70 F100 friday morning and the crossmember looked the same size in your pic. i only looked at where it sat compared to the upper spring perches. is your larger crossmember just as wide as hte spring perches? does it sit even with the front of the spring perch where the one in that pic sits just back some from the front of the spring perch?

here is a picture of the wide cross member. they sit slightly infront of the spring perches and are slightly wider than the perches (not including the lip)

on the front drivers side of the frame rail right below where the core support bolt on is a part number on the frame. what is the part number? maybe this is a model change to the frame. having a wider or narrower crossmember.

I wonder how much thicker the steel on the narrow F250 crossmember is?
